The Van Vleck collection of Japanese woodblock prints if one of the Chazen’s most important holdings. Consisting of around 4,000 prints, it is reputed to be the eighth largest collection of Japanese prints in the United States. The prints were originally collected by Edward Burr Van Vleck, professor of mathematics at UW-Madison from 1906-1929 and were donated to the Chazen (then Elvehjem) by Van Vleck’s son John Hasbrouck Van Vleck and later his wife, Mrs. Abigail Van Vleck, in the 1980s. This print, along with around 2,000 others, were part of the original donation in 1980. (Panczenko, foreword, The Edward Burr Van Vleck Collection of Japanese Prints, 1990).

Ohara Shoson (Japanese, 1877-1945), Two Dragonflies and Flowering Red Hollyhocks, 1934, color woodcut, bequest of John H. Van Vleck, 1980.2816
