Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chazen Museum of Art with this exclusive, limited-run ornament, featuring Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist by Defendente Ferrari. This ornament kicks off the Chazen Collection Ornament annual program, where each year, an ornament is released featuring a work from the Chazen permanent collection.
Defendente Ferrari was active in Italy’s northwest Piedmont region in the first half of the sixteenth century. His style exhibits the refined qualities of late-Gothic art in the attention to detail, the use of jewel-like colors, and the angularity of the draperies. In this sacra conversazione (holy conversation) the figures are shown inside a church, referencing the actual space this painting would have occupied over a chapel altar. We think this painting may have been the central panel of a two-tiered, multiple-panel altarpiece, or polyptych.
